Day 1 – Arrival in Xining & Local Orientation

Arrive in Xining, the gateway to Qinghai province and the northeastern Silk Road. Spend the morning exploring the city’s markets, sampling local Tibetan and Muslim cuisine, and visiting the Ta’er (Kumbum) Monastery, a major center of Tibetan Buddhist learning adorned with colorful murals and chapels.

Evening at leisure to rest and acclimatize to the high-altitude plateau environment.

Evening: stroll through the city center for a dinner at a local restaurant.

Overnight in Xining

Day 2 – Xining → Qinghai Lake: Highland Reflections & Lake Lunch

Depart Xining after breakfast and drive toward Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China. En route, stop at small Tibetan villages and pastoral landscapes dotted with grazing yaks and horses.

Arrive at Qinghai Lake around midday for lunch with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Spend the afternoon walking along the lakeshore, taking in reflections of the peaks, birdlife, and vast highland plains. Sunset provides spectacular photo opportunities over the sapphire waters.

Day 3 – Qinghai Lake → Desert Camp: Crossing the Plateau

Depart Qinghai Lake and begin the journey west across the high-altitude desert plateau. Travel through sweeping grasslands, barren hills, and remote pastoral settlements. Stop for short walks and photo opportunities to observe local nomadic life.

Arrive at a desert camp in the late afternoon. Evening: enjoy sunset over the dunes and starlit skies, with optional short walks or camel rides. This overnight experience gives a taste of the remote Silk Road frontier.
